Apple #WWDC20 Proof Events are going hybrid and what worked (and didn’t!)

Apple #WWDC20 Proof Events are going hybrid and what worked (and didn’t!)

Tim Cook

The most recent event of #WWDC2020 by Apple is highlighting a new trend. One, where the physical event are still the root of what they have always been with cracks showing what the future may hold.

Apple poignantly started their conference with the reverse stage shot. This is one of my favorite shots because it feels very intimate. It conveys to the audience the feeling of a private conversation by saying “hey, we’re in this big room with no one here but you and I and what I have to say is important”.  I commend Apple for their opening but would have made one suggestion, when Tim Cook is talking directly to the camera on the tight shot, hold it. Let his words be the action. We didn’t need additional movement which actually had the opposite effect on me, distracting.

For a large trend with Virtual Events,  this is an= example of how we are now moving away from the ‘Web Camera’ and onto the next phase, the hybrid (audience free) filming. While it’s amazing and powerful that we all have TV studio production power within our rooms, the problem is every web camera is a wide-angle lens with a max 720p resolution and ALL the shots look the same.

2nd, their use of unique spaces within their office and their team from the shelter at home added high production value. We as viewers, enjoy the visual story telling aspects of this and Apple showed us what is possible. Now, most people I know, do not have resources like Apple and the ability to film in so many different locations. But, like Zooming has changed video conferencing, changes in technology can give us access to this.

With my next post, I will talk about how every event can look like a hybrid event using some groundbreaking yet accessible technology all from a simple green screen.
